Welcome to this conversation on Keto.

Before we begin it is important to go over a few things. For 15 some odd years I was stuck at 183 pounds. I was very active, and eat what I thought was healthy but couldn’t lose more than a couple of pounds and then it always seemed to be in the wrong places. I tried all the diets and fads to lose weight. I had regular check-ups that always came back normal. I had no thyroid issue or anything that should have been stopping me from losing. I begged my doctor for appetite suppressors to help and was told no. I threatened to go to a new doctor and still got told no. I was beside myself and desperate. Then I saw something on Facebook called Keto. It said I could eat bacon and didn’t have to exercise! I had tried everything else so I decided to try the 7-day kick start. Well, I fumbled through the process of getting the “right” food and listening to what the people in the group talked about. It was a good group and encouraging but I was kind of lost so I started researching and experimenting on my own and this is what I discovered.

There are two types of keto according to the groups: strict keto and dirty/lazy keto. On the strict keto plan, you will definitely spend a ton of money on the “product” they would love for you to buy like shakes, protein drinks and snack bars. Now I am not saying anything against their stuff but I certainly could not afford it. Though there are people who swear buy them, I decided to do it without them. That said, if you can afford it and decide to buy the products go right ahead.

After much thought and prayer, I decided to go dirty and let me give you the two simple reasons: First, I couldn’t nor wouldn’t spend the money on “products” and have to argue with my husband over the money it would cost. Secondly and more importantly, I know Holly and Holly would fail if she had to cook to meals, one for her and one for Mark. This had to be a long term, sustainable life-style or I was out. I contacted my doctor and told her what I wanted to do and she gave me the thumbs up.

TO BE CLEAR: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. IF YOU HAVE HEALTH ISSUES CHECK WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE STARTING ANY DIETARY PROGRAM.

The following are answers to a few questions that I had when I first started.

Q: What exactly is Keto and how does it work?

A: Keto is short for Ketosis or ketogenic. Ketosis is a normal process that happens when your body doesn't have enough carbs to burn for energy. Instead, it burns fat and makes substances called ketones, which it can use for fuel. (According to webmd.com)

Q: How do I get my body in to ketosis: the point where my body begins to burn the fat?

A: Follow the 70/25/5 plan. 70% (123g)- fat, 25% (98g)- protein, 5% (20) – carbs

Q: is it expensive?

A: Honestly, it can be. However, you can achieve ketosis and lose pounds and inches without it being expensive.

Q: Are there particular pantry items I will have to buy?

A: Yes, however they are not overly expensive and not items that you have to but all the time unless you bake a lot. I will provide you with a short list.

Q: Is there “counting” and/or meetings?

A: No counting but a small amount of tracking until you really begin to figure out what is what. There is an app called “Carb Manager” for iPhones and android phones you should go ahead and download that will be a lifesaver. Fill out the info found in the “get started” section but know that I will do a short tutorial to tell help. NOTE: keto works on NET carbs not total carbs and my macros are turned off. Also, you do not have to purchase the “premium” upgrade.
